چکیده

In this project, our aim was to detect and clip emotional scenes from movies, using natural language processing techniques on their subtitles. Our approach involved the design of a naïve counting classifier, to which we gradually added semantic knowledge. With each increment, we analyzed the change in performance and made suitable modifications to our classifier. In our second approach, we trained a maximum entropy classifier on some handtagged subtitles and compared the performance of the MaxEnt classifier with different types of data and pre-learned emotional words. Using these classifiers, we then created an interactive tool for searching and watching 2-3 minute clips of movies. Subsequent sections of this paper describe our approaches in more detail.

Automatic Violence Scenes Detection: A multi-modal approach

In this working note, we propose a set of features and a classification scheme for detecting automatically violent scenes in movies. The features are extracted from audio, video, and subtitles modalities of the movies. In violent scenes classification, we found the following features relevant: the short time audio energy, motion component, and shot words rate. We classified the shots into viole...

Automatic Text Segmentation for Movie Subtitles

To improve information retrieval from films we attempt to segment movies into scenes using the subtitles. Film subtitles differ significantly in nature from other texts; we describe some of the challenges of working with movie subtitles. We test a few modifications to the TextTiling algorithm, in order to get an effective segmentation.

On Subtitling of Ta’ārof Apologies

Apologies are sources of problems in the process of Persian-English subtitling as they are performed with variant forms and functions in these two languages and cultures. ‘Ta’ārof apologies’-Persian apologies which are extended to show politeness-creates more serious obstacles for the subtitlers. These difficulties root in the culture-specific contexts in which they are used as well as the cult...

Auditory conflict and congruence in frontotemporal dementia

Impaired analysis of signal conflict and congruence may contribute to diverse socio-emotional symptoms in frontotemporal dementias, however the underlying mechanisms have not been defined. Here we addressed this issue in patients with behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD; n = 19) and semantic dementia (SD; n = 10) relative to healthy older individuals (n = 20). We created auditory...

Emotional Subtitles: A System and Potential Applications for Deaf and Hearing Impaired People

Many Deaf and Hearing Impaired people use subtitles to gain access to audio content on television and film presentations. Although subtitles tell the viewer what is being said they fail to communicate how it is being said. This “emotional gap” experienced by viewer’s highlights a significant drawback to current subtitling especially when used for learning by the Deaf. In this paper we introduce...
